As a child, Alice Roi loved rummaging through her mother's closets and staging fashion shows for her family. Her passion for fashion led her to study fine arts at New York University and Parsons School of Design. After starting out working in fashion at Elle Magazine, Roi launched her own label in 1999, when she was still in her early twenties. She quickly got attention for her wild colors and unpredictably short hems, but her Spring 2002 collection was notable for its use of blacks and grays, which prompted reviewers to rave about the designer entering a more adult phase of her career. This notable collection was also praised by the CFDA, which honored her with a nomination for the Perry Ellis Award for upcoming designers. Her list of faithful clients includes Julianne Moore, Sofia Coppola and Chloe Sevigny.
