Known for her "rock chic" style, Catherine Malandrino describes her collection as both a "lifestyle and a look." Malandrino has worked as the creative director for Et Vous, as well as for Louis Feraud Haute Couture in Paris. She later moved to New York and became the head designer for Diane von Furstenberg. In 1998 she opened her own store in SoHo and soon afterward her clothes were also available at Henri Bendel. Malandrino's goal in design is to give individuality to each piece she designs. Her pieces are characterized by contrasting refinement and rough edges, what she calls "refined negligee." Her celebrity clients include Madonna, Julia Roberts, Mary J. Blige, Cameron Diaz, Winona Ryder, Demi Moore, Sarah Jessica Parker, Nicole Kidman and Penelope Cruz. She recently signed a lease to open a store on the edge of the Meatpacking District in Manhattan.

Franco-American relations: The French woman is not so far from an American woman anymore. Before, the gap was huge. Today, a lot of women in France want to look more American, they want to have this more casual way to handle things. And an American woman who has all this casual side wants to look more detail-oriented -- at the same time as shes free to express herself. |
