Donna Karan was born Donna Faske in Forest Hills, New York, on October 2, 1948. Both her parents were involved in fashion careers, so it seemed inevitable that Donna should follow in their footsteps. She was still a student at Parsons School of Design in the mid-1960s when Anne Klein hired her for summer a job. In the late sixties and early seventies, Karan worked her way up from assistant to designer for Anne Klein & Co. With the death of Klein in 1974, Donna Karan was named her successor. Shortly after the launch of Anne Klein II (the diffusion line) Donna Karan felt that she was ready to go it alone: She formed Donna Karan New York (DKNY) and launched the first Donna Karan collection in 1985. She added a hosiery collection in 1987 and DKNY Menswear in the early 1990s. Karan continues to expand her collection, having recently launched City DKNY, DKNY Jeans and DKNY Kids, as well as fragrance, underwear, eyewear and watch lines. She has won many awards, including three CFDA awards for womenswear, one for menswear, a Femmy Award for her intimate apparel and a Fifi award for best women's fragrance. Donna Karan International was acquired by LVHM (Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton) in 2001.
