Born in Colombia and raised in Puerto Rico, Gustavo Arango was brought to New York City by a passion for design that led him to study at F.I.T. After graduating, he continued to live in New York, working as a fashion designer for Pierre Balmain; three years later, he launched his own collection. Arango's choice of high-quality fabric and eye for detail drew attention throughout the industry, even catching the notice of Bill Blass, for whose label he designs a suit collection. After his apartment was destroyed on September 11, the designer moved back to Puerto Rico. Having returned, somewhat tragically, to his hometown, Arango became inspired by the fashions of the two diametrically opposed areas in which he had lived. His style was thus transformed into a unique combination of the exotic beauty of Puerto Rico and the sleek, modern femininity of New York City.
