John Varvatos believes men's clothing should look and feel comfortable and appropriate in any situation, day or night. The Michigan native first came to New York in 1983 to join the team at Polo Ralph Lauren. In 1990, he became head of menswear design for Calvin Klein but went back to Polo in the mid-nineties when he was appointed corporate Senior Vice President in charge of men's wear design for all Ralph Lauren brands. He remained with the company for several years, but eventually found himself in need of a new challenge; a desire that prompted Varvatos to partner with Nautica under whose auspices he launched the John Varvatos Fall 2000 Menswear line. Varvatos's line is comprised of tailored clothing, sportswear, leather accessories and footwear. His designs pair the luxurious with the casual, creating a look of easy, simple elegance. Before his first collection even hit the retailers, Varvatos was awarded the Perry Ellis Award for New Menswear Designer of the Year by the CFDA. And the CFDA has continued to honor Varvatos, awarding him with Menswear Designer of the Year in both 2000 and 2001. Varvatos continually expands his company, having established a design partnership with Converse Inc in 2001 and an exclusive license agreement with fragrance and skin care manufacturer Zirh, which will develop, manufacture and distribute various products under the Varvatos name.
