Marc Jacobs Spring 1993 collection for the Perry Ellis
label was a cacophony of carefully "improvised" layering, rhinestone-trimmed
Birkenstocks, and chiffon versions of plaid flannel shirts.
Although it was acclaimed in fashion circles, the collection
was widely ridiculed for its attempt to pass off thrift-store
chic as high fashion. But the designer made a major comeback
in 1994, debuting a new collection under his own name on his
31st birthday. Jacobs's ironic take on seventies trashy luxe
featured see-through shirts, laminated sequined jeans, and lots
of neon rubber -- perfect for disaffected rock-video stylists
and fashion editors, who swooned over Jacobs's slightly dangerous-looking
brand of glamour. The more recent Marc by Marc Jacobs line has
quickly become every urban hipster's must-have label.
