David Chu first began to think seriously about a career in fashion when he took a summer drawing class at FIT in New York. He started his company, Nautica, in 1983, using the Latin word for "ships" as the name of the organization. The spinnaker logo is a symbol of "adventure, action and classicism." Chu says he often finds inspiration in vintage military uniforms and athletic apparel. Circling the globe several times a year for business and pleasure, Chu has developed a keen insight and appreciation into the needs of the modern adventurer. "Travel and experience are very important to me I have built the Nautica brand according to this philosophy," he says. Chu continues to expand his collection, with recent ventures including the Nautica Jeans Company, which makes both men's and women's jeans, and a fragrance line. The Nautica flagship store is in Rockefeller Center.
