Paula Hian was bitten by the fashion bug early: She was sketching doll dresses
as a five-year-old, and by ten was designing her own clothes.
But she didn't decide on an actual career in fashion until graduating
from Northwestern University, at which point she enrolled at
the Fashion Institute of Technology. As a student there, she
won first prize at the Concours International des Jeunes Crateurs
de Mode Competition in Paris. Her winning design is on permanent
display at the Louvre. She worked for Tahari and S.G. Gilbert
before launching her own label. Hian selects her elegant fabrics
and trimmings during her twice-yearly buying trips to Paris.
