In Spring 2001, fashion designer Carmen Webber, stylist Carmia Marshall and model Shawna McBean decided to combine their styles, experiences, visions and talent to form Sistahs Harlem New York. Their collection is inspired by a fusion of many different cultures, all of which can be seen in New York City, from street prophets to private school girls. Sistahs Harlem, as a group, hopes to put Harlem on the fashion map by highlighting the rich cultural and artistic heritage of the area. The label is most easily defined as "street couture," and features collections with such themes as "Les Femmes du Monde" and "Rastafarian Street Punk." The Sistahs Harlem collection is continually expanding, venturing most recently into an accessory line. Best known for homemade, unfinished, yet cleverly crafted pieces, the line has been praised by many celebrities, including Iman, Eve, Avril Lavigne, Patricia Field and Missy Elliot.
