VASSEUR-ESQUIVEL

Courageously passing their business card to Bloomingdale's fashion director Kal Ruttenstein at a restaurant one night was the lucky move for young designers Gaba Esquivel and Thomas Vasseur of Vasseur-Esquivel. Ruttenstein, who went to view the young designers' collection the following day, liked it so much that he not only bought the line long after the store's buying deadline had passed, he also promised the young duo store windows in October. The collection, which is full of modern flounces, a sharp trench, and well-finished jackets, is made of ultra-luxe materials like cashmere, alpaca, and silk. The designers, who met at fashion school in Paris, describe their clothes as "soft and feminine," mixing Vasseur's French chic with Esquivel's Argentine flair. If schooling is any predictor of success, then this well-trained pair seems destined for greatness: Vasseur apprenticed under Azzedine Alaia while Esquivel worked with Gilles Dufour at Balmain.
