Oscar (Already!?) Stalks the Undulating Curve of Shifting Expectations

Does Oscar buzz make you more inclined to see a movie and less inclined to like it? Is too-early buzz a buzz kill? Bloggers are bidding up Charlie Wilson’s War (at a time when war-on-terror films have been about as successful as the war itself). Meanwhile, The Darjeeling Limited disappoints less than expected (even as lauded short Hotel Chevalier seems a little “whatever”); Dirty Sexy Money just disappoints; and Broadway awaits David Mamet’s strange-bedfellows political drama, with Nathan Lane and Dylan Baker: It’s called November, and it’s opening in the spring. If only it were the other way around.
