Beginnings: The Breakthrough Moment

Armando Iannucci, Writer

I thought, I think I know what I’m doing.

I’ve been writing for about 25 years, and the first ten or 15 years I was always convinced it’s going to be the worst thing ever made. And that someone will come up to me, usually the person who commissioned it, and say, What the heck are you doing? This is our money. Do you understand? Go away. The moment I finally became confident, I suppose, was when we were doing The Thick of It, the U.K. political show, which was very much thrown together at the last minutedeliberately so, lots of improvising, writing it very last-minute. And it just happened to come together really well. I thought, I think I know what I’m doing. Or maybe I’m just a bit older and feel like I’ve got away with it so long now, that in the end, probably, I don’t think anyone will come up to me and say, What the hell are you doing?
