When vice-president Aaron Burr read that Alexander Hamilton had called him “a dangerous man … who ought not to be trusted,” the stage was set for the final act in their ­decade-old rivalry. On the morning of July 11, the two enemies met on the dueling grounds of Weehawken, New Jersey. Each fired one shot from his .56-caliber pistol. Hamilton missed. Burr did not.
