--An editor at Vogue, from "Wintour's Tale"
FEATURES Wintour's Tale Land's End Vogue editor Anna Wintour has famously armored herself with an imperious, almost androidlike coolness, but this year chinks of humanity became visible: First her fifteen-year marriage collapsed after word spread of her afternoon dalliances with a Texas telecommunications billionaire; then a rival publisher poached protégée Kate Betts to run Harper's Bazaar. But if her enemies smelled blood, S.I. Newhouse's acquisition of WWD and W last month should make them think again. Mary, Queen of Hip-Hop Soul Mary J. Blige made her name by singing R&B with a rapper's edge: Instead of crooning about boys, she gave us gritty songs about broken promises and unpaid bills. On her new album, she's keeping it real -- "I am every young girl in every hood" -- but there are glimmers of hope. Bush's Battle Plan As George W.'s campaign generals see it, Texas is a lock, brother Jeb will deliver Florida, and California is already on the defensive (Reagan Democrats, rise up!). That leaves New York, a state his father once lost by only 2 percent of the vote. But George W. is a man with a plan and a surprisingly deep network of F.O.G.'s: formidable New York friends and followers -- ranging from liberal Democrats to grizzled Republican pols -- who think they can make Texans of us all.
