Alternate-Side Fantasy

Last week, Mercedes-Benz announced it will introduce a U.S. version of the Smart, the tiny car that’s swept Europe, in 2006. But read the fine print: The American car, still in the works, is a four-seater, a few feet longer than its 81⁄2-foot-long cousin the Fortwo. New Yorkers clearly need the real Smart, for reasons any alternate-side-of-the-street parker will grasp. On an Upper West Side block, 42 Fortwos could fit where 21 normal vehicles would. So consider this a plea to the French and Germans who make the Smart: Bring us this car! We pledge, in return, that New York will probably go for Kerry.
