Boy George, James Iha, and John Cameron Mitchell (Hedwig)—as well as editors from rock rags Spin and Rolling Stone—have made this weekly dance party a nexus for all things glam. Across the river, at Billyburg’s warehouse-turned-gallery/nightclub, Crashin’ In attracts a string of indie artists whose artful approaches to music come across just as clearly in how they segue from tune to tune. Yet with all due respect to Gordy Moakes from BlocParty, Paul Thomson of Franz Ferdinand, Carlos D from Interpol, and Nick Zinner of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, the real draw here is the up-and-coming talent like the experimental UK rock trio Test Icles and and the beat-making boys of Shy Child.

Great British House has become a local nightlife staple since crossing the Atlantic seven years ago because it recognizes a big party only gets bigger when big-name talent tackles the turntables. Past DJs are a who’s who of It band members (Paddy Boom of The Scissor Sisters, Oliver Crowe of The Stills) and a lengthy list of living legends (Marky Ramone of The Ramones, Andy Rourke of the Smiths, Martin Gore of Depeche Mode). Club kids are still recovering from this year’s Halloween bash at which new wave icon Andy Bell of Erasure spun tracks from his latest solo effort.

Having just celebrated its fifth birthday, the resident DJs at this Meatpacking lounge are celebrities in their own right. Will Smith’s former partner-in-rhyme DJ Jazzy Jeff helms the house on Mondays while DJ Lindsey takes charge for the popular monthly installment of Negroclash. At APT’s Other Music Presents… series, A-list out-of-towners stop by to test out new material. It’s a chance to wrap your ears around the latest from the likes of brit-hop DJ Trevor Jackson, Peanut Butter Wolf, Berlin-based Ellen Allien, and underground Detroit techno DJ Theo Parrish.

Table 50 gives APT a run for the money thanks to its industry-elite bookings and its spacious dance floor. But whereas APT caters to turntable traditionalists, Table 50 likes to mix it up with special guests that fall outside the expected. So alongside hip-hop legends like Grandmaster Flash and DJ Scratch or the rap star Q-tip, you’ll catch headbangers like Kid Rock and socialites like the Ronsons (Mark and Samantha). There’s no apparent rhyme or reason but hey, no one’s complaining.
