It was a deal that almost vanished. MLBKaye International’s Warren Pearl had scheduled a closing before lunch on September 11. But “there was no way for us to meet,” says Pearl. “The buyers’ lawyers weren’t in their downtown offices, and they were stuck in Jersey.” The following week, when stocks took a dive, the buyers started to talk about bolting from the deal and forfeiting their $43,500 deposit. “They were terrified of buying in New York, terrified of prices going through the floor. They figured it would be cheaper to lose the deposit,” says Pearl. It took the market’s 300-point rebound to convince them to stay.
