The hotel business may be cratering, but don’t tell Rita Schrager. The estranged wife of innkeeper Ian has just signed a contract for a 3,700-square-foot loft in Richard Meier’s minimalist glass towers, developed by the Sunshine Group, on Perry Street. The mother of two – who was bounced by the board at 101 Central Park West when she tried to buy a three-bedroom earlier this year – paid an undisclosed amount for the Perry Street space; one source says it might be as much as $8.35 million. (William B. May’s Roger Erickson, who brokered the sale, declined to comment.) The buildings won’t be done until early 2002, but Martha Stewart and Calvin Klein are said to be buying penthouses. At least Schrager will find one familiar hotel amenity: Jean-Georges Vongerichten, who partnered with Meier, will open a café downstairs that will feature room service for residents.
