The Best Bet
The sculptor Francis Upritchard is a modern-day Surrealist who transforms found objects—faux Wedgwood vases, school compasses, hockey sticks—into spooky relics. The 29-year-old New Zealander has made a name for herself in London, where her collectors include Charles Saatchi, but she’s still unknown in New York. That means the work at her first two Stateside solo shows, hosted by Andrea Rosen Gallery and Salon 94, is relatively affordable (prices range from $3,000 to $20,000). Upritchard’s more spectacular pieces include fake shrunken heads and a miniature mummy suspended in mid-air, but others are decorative enough for adventurous homes. Shown here are “Two Big Blue Lamps” (already sold) and “Four White Goods”—found ceramic vases with sculpted heads ($10,000 at Salon 94, 12 E. 94th St., nr. Madison Ave.; 646-672-9212).
