I often walk around Soho looking for cool stuff sold on the street. Usually, all I see is pretty ordinary jewelry, bags, more jewelry, and the ubiquitous book vendors. But recently I came upon something much cooler: a table full of gorgeous glass vases, bowls, and cups. The colors were incredible, the shapes were simple but sexy, and can we discuss the prices? As one of the guys selling them put it, “The taller stuff is $30 to $50, the shorter stuff is $20.”
John West, Thaddeus Wolf, and Freddy Matienzo, whose company is called Tres Hombres, met at 160 Glass, a studio in Williamsburg. John teaches glass-blowing two nights a week; all three produce other artists’ designs and do their own work on the side.
It’s only a matter of time before these guys are discovered, go indoors, and raise their prices accordingly.
The stand is open on weekends from 11 a.m. till stock runs out. On the corner of Prince and Greene Streets. Private glass-blowing lessons can be arranged. Call 347-581-0669 for information.
