At this point, the news of another twentieth-century furniture, accessories, and art shop is more likely to elicit rolled eyes than run-don’t-walk excitement. But Alan Rosenberg—Works of Art is an exception. A lanky 37-year-old with a master’s in the history of design from FIT, Rosenberg had been dealing in these pieces from home for several years, but when his collections took over his apartment, he decided that perhaps a gallery space was a good idea. His new digs are so small (ten people would be a crowd) that it seems more like a private home than like a store. That is, a home with a pair of Edward Wormley for Dunbar chairs ($5,600 for the pair), throw pillows of vintage Chanel couture fabric ($600 for four), a credenza by Winsor White for Baker ($5,800) set up with a fab collection of Finnish glass vases from the fifties and sixties ($500 to $2,500), and some enamel tableware by Annemarie Davidson ($80 to $280). If you were to live in this “home,” you might sip coffee from a sterling-silver service by Alphonse La Paglia ($5,200) while sitting at a seventies burlwood desk ($3,600).
