Resigned to the fact that the chilly weather’s here to stay, we’re finally taking stock of our woolly winter things – and shivering at the thought of trotting out those dark, boxy coats for yet another season. This winter, it’s hard to resist a flurry of luscious red, camel, beige, and tweed coats – all in refreshingly classic shapes (remember how quickly you tired of the sashed-leather look last winter?). Here’s what we’re cozying up to, for less than $300 per.
Tweedy fabrics – on everything from shells to shoes – are this season’s most obviously trendy choice. Club Monaco’s boxy brown-and-white-herringbone version has chic leather trim ($279 at Club Monaco stores). For a sleeker look, snap up Zara’s skinny lightweight-houndstooth version with a black vinyl belt ($189 at Zara stores).
Solid colors can be just as stylish, especially in warm neutral colors. A dark-ish camel coat from H&M is a steal ($89 at H&M); J.Crew’s paler version with tortoiseshell buttons is even softer ($248 at J.Crew stores). For that sharp-edged belted look, check out a cream-colored style from A|X Armani Exchange ($275 at A|X Armani Exchange stores). And, though strong colors have a reputation for going stale quickly, it’s hard to imagine ever tiring of a crimson coat from United Colors of Benetton ($258 at Benetton stores).
H&M, 640 Fifth Ave., at 51st St. (212-489-0390).
