How private is La Casa Que Canta? A-listers like Jack Nicholson and Claudia Schiffer have holed up at the ultrasecluded resort on Mexico’s central Pacific coast to escape the glare of publicity. Apparently, that wasn’t private enough. To provide even more anonymity, the owners of La Casa built El Murmullo, an even more secluded walled-off villa that opened two years ago just below the hotel. If you’re going to steal away with someone who doesn’t happen to be your spouse, that’s the level of privacy you want.
You will not run into anyone you know in the lobby. There is no lobby. A member of the staff—your personal staff—will pick you up at the airport, drive you to the massive wooden door that marks the property’s entrance, and deposit you directly in your room. You could do worse than to never venture beyond those four walls. Each of the villa’s four suites is like a personal oasis: white stucco, cool stone-tile floors, simple hand-crafted teak furniture, open-air showers big enough for two, and a private sundeck and plunge pool.
And there’s no reason to leave if you don’t care to. You’ll have your own housekeeper, who creates intricate rose-petal designs on your bedspread. A private chef will whip up Baja cuisine like lime pancakes and shrimp tacos whenever you want. And a butler is at hand to serve you margaritas in your pool or arrange side-by-side massages under shady palms.
If you do decide to risk exposure, there’s a beautiful stretch of beach just below the hotel, and nearby Zihuatanejo is a charming place to shop for local crafts. Jeeves can arrange golf, sunset cruises, deep-sea fishing, snorkeling, and horseback riding. And once you’ve worked up an appetite, La Casa’s restaurant offers up fresh seafood—shrimp tamales, grilled red snapper—prepared with Mexican flair.
Still not enough privacy for you? For a cool $3,175 a night, the good people at El Murmullo will rent you the whole damn place.
