Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie Coin Summer’s First New Euphemism: ‘Relief Work’

We’re not having an affair! We’re doing humanitarian relief work!” is the best variation on “It’s … It’s not what you think!” we’ve ever heard. But it’s a line you can only (almost) get away with if you’re Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. After being photographed together in Africa, this summer’s most ludicrous, most photographed, best-tressed hotties (oops: best-tressed relief workers) star as gun-toting, skirt-hiking, hair-tousling, spouse-assassinating killers in Mr. and Mrs. Smith (June 10). So far, through the trailers and tabloids alone, the two have generated a star power more potent than the Jedi Knights’ Force.

With the offscreen gossip and onscreen aura that’s been missing from Hollywood lately, Pitt and Jolie will tower over the summer. (Who cares about Britney and Kevin anymore? Or Affleck and what’s-her-name?) Brad and Angelina are bringing back all that great, gossipy Hollywood Babylon madness. What’s more, they’re doing it with a film that might—gasp!—actually be fun. After all, it’s a comic thriller from director Doug Liman, the director of the hysterical Swingers and the fierce Bourne Identity. (And, yes, we’ve heard about the reshoots—but the same doubts preceded Liman’s Bourne, and that turned out just fine.) But even if the movie stinks, the drama is already irresistible. The real proof of the duo’s superpowers will come at the end of the summer—when we predict the mere phrase “relief work” will sound a little dirty.
