Moonlight’s Oscar-nominated Naomie Harris covers New York Magazine’s Spring Fashion issue, shot by photographer Erik Madigan Heck. Harris talks to writer Elizabeth Day about the role in which she lost herself so brilliantly, as well as anti-immigrant rhetoric, her experiences with racism, and more.
In styling Harris for the cover, the Cut’s style director Rebecca Ramsey says she knew she was going to be working with colorful backgrounds, and thus looked for colors that would contrast nicely. “We really went for looks that would also create great graphic shapes, like the amazing Céline cocoon dress on the cover and the Emilio Pucci jumpsuit inside,” Ramsey says. The dress Harris is wearing on the cover of the magazine was the final look at Céline’s spring show at Paris Fashion Week. “When the the last model walked out, surrounded by this gorgeous pink, I knew it would make a great photo later on,” Ramsey recalls.
As for her makeup, Ramsey wanted to highlight Harris’s natural beauty, sleeking her hair back and keeping the makeup simple.
