Stella Bugbee, president and editor-in-chief of the Cut, announced today that Ruth Spencer (@ruths) has been promoted to deputy editor of the site. In her new role, Spencer will run the Cut’s news coverage and be responsible for ambitious feature projects, covering politics and #MeToo in particular. She joined the site as a senior editor in January 2017, and has played an integral role in growing the Cut’s audience (up 91 percent to 10.3 million monthly users in the third quarter of 2018).

“Ruth is a brilliant editor with an entrepreneurial approach to traffic growth, and I’m proud to have her as my deputy,” says Bugbee. “She has an intuitive ability to dive into the news stories that matter to our readers, and is the perfect woman to take the Cut to its next phase.”

Prior to joining the Cut, Spencer was the deputy features editor at the Guardian U.S. She is a graduate of the University of King’s College in Halifax, Canada, and has a master’s in journalism from NYU.

The Cut was recently named Website of the Year by Adweek, and has expanded to Snapchat Discover, podcasts, and merch.
