New York Magazine editor-in-chief David Haskell announced today that Hanna Rosin has joined as editorial director for audio; he also announced the promotions of Adrienne Green, to features editor; Gazelle Emami, to culture editor; and Zak Cheney-Rice, to features writer. These appointments fill crucial roles as the magazine covers this unprecedented time.

“Hanna’s impressive career in both magazines and podcasts makes her the ideal candidate to expand New York’s work in audio,” says editor-in-chief David Haskell. “Adrienne is an expansive, curious, discerning editor, and is beloved by everyone she edits. I can’t wait to see her work in the magazine feature well. The project of further merging the print and digital magazine’s enterprise culture coverage is the perfect challenge for Gazelle, who has, especially in the last year, done extraordinary work carving Vulture’s path into some of the most urgent conversations taking place in culture and American life. And it will surprise no one on staff that we will be seeing more feature writing from Zak, an expert at finding the right way into news, at turning an idea around so we see it from unexpected angles, at grounding the present in the past.”

As editorial director for audio, Hanna Rosin will lead the direction of New York’s podcast ambitions, both supporting existing podcast programming — including Kara Swisher and Scott Galloway’s Pivot, Jesse David Fox’s Good One, and the upcoming podcast from The Cut — and greatly expanding New York’s footprint in a variety of podcast formats. Rosin will work closely with the Vox Media Podcast Network team, including Nishat Kurwa, VP & executive producer, audio, but be rooted at the magazine.

Rosin was most recently co-host of the NPR show Invisibilia, which just passed 100 million total downloads. She previously worked as a writer for The Atlantic as well as for Slate, where she founded its women’s section and hosted the Waves podcast. She is the author of two books, including The End of Men: And the Rise of Women, which was a national best seller.

Adrienne Green joined New York’s The Cut as a senior editor in 2019, and established herself as a sharp editor and essential member of the staff. As a features editor for New York she will continue to edit stories that live on The Cut and collaborate closely with The Cut’s editor-in-chief, Stella Bugbee, while also editing across the entire site and print magazine, and work on charting the magazine’s longform assigning. She’ll also edit the Intelligencer section of the print magazine. Before joining The Cut, Green was managing editor at The Atlantic.

Gazelle Emami, now deputy editor of Vulture, is taking the expanded position of culture editor, New York. In this role, Emami will work with David Haskell and Vulture editor Neil Janowitz to plan the biggest bets in culture journalism and more closely sync Vulture’s coverage with the print magazine’s — as she did captaining this week’s TV issue. She will editorially direct the print magazine’s Culture Pages section, and lead planning and assigning for big culture moments for the magazine, from special issues to enterprise profiles and process stories. Emami joined Vulture as a senior editor in 2015, and previously worked as deputy features editor at HuffPost.

Zak Cheney-Rice is being promoted to features writer, New York, reflecting a stunning body of work this year and in particular three unforgettable magazine features. In his new role he will write features as well as columns tied to the news cycle. Cheney-Rice was previously head of Mic’s race, identity, and social-justice vertical, The Movement.
