Ask Silver Scam Checker
On the programme on 21 April 2025, we reported on how text messages remain one of the most popular ways for scammers to approach victims.
To combat this, a number of new scam checker services have been launched, which use technology to allow message recipients to check whether or not they’re genuine, and report scams.
In HQ we spoke to Alex Somervell, who was inspired to launch a service called Ask Silver, after a family member lost around £150,000 in a scam. He explained that the service acts like a chat bot, which can be added to your contacts, and allows you to forward suspicious messages or emails. It analyses the messages against a fraud database, and will identify anything suspicious, and advise what to do about it.
Information about a range of scam checkers can be found online.
