1. Bar Stuzzichini

928 Broadway, nr. 22nd St.; 212-780-5100

This new restaurant, named after the Italian word for snacks, has added lunch and brunch to its repertoire, including an excellent torta di spaghetti and a salsiccia “burger,” inspired by the street-cart staple.

2. Union Square Cafe

21 E. 16th St., nr. Union Sq. W.; 212-243-4020

Go for the excellent tuna-salad sandwich, and look for Greenmarket specials like the recent strawberry tasting menu.

3. Bar Jamón

125 E. 17th St., nr. Irving Pl.; 212-253-2773

It’s horribly crowded at night, but if you go on a weekend afternoon, you lessen your chances of being jabbed in the ribs or poked in the eye.

4. City Bakery

3 W. 18th St., nr. Fifth Ave.; 212-366-1414

Heavenly pastries beckon from the checkout counter. Pre-dessert, there are inspired soups, sandwiches, and the only salad bar we obsess over.
