Mix and Mat

Posted April 29, 2009
When confronted with the usual array of floral and fruit-patterned prints, we usually forgo place mats altogether. But these hand-printed cotton mats from Philly-based label GirlsCanTell (by designer Sara Selepouchin) add an artsy edge to any dining table. Originally trained as an architect, Selepouchin sketches annotated diagrams of everyday objects—a bicycle, a typewriter, an electric mixer—and screen-prints them onto place mats, tote bags, and dish towels. The black-and-white “foodie” set features two place mats printed with various cooking utensils, and two with an illustrated kitchen mixer.
