In this quaint, nineteenth-century-style print shop, the staff uses letterpresses dating as far back as 1844 to make custom stationery, invitations, and personalized cards. Announcement cards ($250 for 50), four-piece invitations ($675 for 100), and reception cards ($125 for 100) are all printed on Crane's paper.

At their Oakland, California, studio, printers hand-crank four antique presses, producing made-to-order invitations, announcements, and stationery that meld the fifteenth-century technique of letterpress printing with contemporary design. They work individually with clients across the country to ensure that they get exactly what they want. They also offer a collection of folded notes, place cards, and gift cards in distinctive letterpress-printed patterns. Custom announcements begin at $500 for 100; preprinted notes are $16 for a pack of eight cards and envelopes.

We love Cartier's Social Stationery-engraved on thick, handmade stock, harking back to Jazz Age glamour. For weddings, the style is classic, conservative, and very high-end. One hundred custom- engraved invitations, with inner and outer envelopes, will set you back $580.

Schedule a consultation three months before your wedding at Faith Drucker's gorgeous East Side riverview studio, replete with samples from mainstays (Dempsey & Carroll) as well as high-end lesser-knowns (Jansson, Blue Mug Designs). You can order just the invitations and response cards, or work with a Web designer to put all your wedding details, from registry links to honeymoon pictures, online (two basic pages are free; $50 an hour for more design).
