To vet the look and feel of an item on Rent the Runway—the Netflix of designer dresses—you can click 360-degree product views and chat with a fit specialist. Or, starting October 17, you can slip the very garment over your non-virtual body, when the e-tailer unveils a loungy showroom on the second floor of Henri Bendel (712 Fifth Ave., nr. 55th St.; 212-315-5917). Walk in or book an appointment to browse some 500 dresses, grouped by occasion: from Holiday Party (a kicky long-sleeve floral dress by Matthew Williamson, $200) to Black Tie (a lipstick-red, one-shoulder chiffon Carlos Miele gown, $150). Take the rental with you or schedule a delivery closer to your event, returning the dress in the standard prepaid envelope a few days later. Each fitting room is equipped with a scanner and an iPad, so shoppers can keep a record of try-ons in their virtual closets.
