The news came on Thursday afternoon via Facebook video, just a bit less than 24-hours shy of National Crayon Day: Crayola was retiring Dandelion. The soft-yellow hue with light hints of orange — more saturated than Goldenrod, yet more subdued than Yellow, perfect for coloring in bright shining suns — was first introduced in 1990, and became a fan favorite during its brief 27 years in the box. The online reaction was immediate, 1,600 people smashed that crying face, Facebook-emoting their sadness as group mourning commenced in the comments section. “I have to admit I am absolutely devastated,” one commenter wrote. “Outrageous,” said another. “I am going to hope this is an April fools joke,” said one hopeful, desperate woman. But even with yellow making waves in recent fashion weeks, primed for a comeback, Dandelion’s goodbye is certain — gone forever like maize, lemon yellow, and orange red (a personal favorite) of Crayola boxes past. In anticipation of its retirement (like the Monopoly thimble before), now’s the time to stock up on this happy yellow. It’s available in hoards of 500, 72, 48, 24, and 16 on eBay. In a limited-edition 15-inch collector’s edition and a baby onesie. And in the full range of Crayola’s 24-crayon boxes (and larger) until supplies run out. In May the company will announce its replacement, and all we know now is that’ll be a color in the blue family. As if we really needed another one of those.
