This project does not imply that NAACP_LDF endorses the Strategist or eBay.
This month, eBay, in partnership with the Strategist, went back to some of our favorite celebrity shoppers — including Sandra “Pepa” Denton of Salt-N-Pepa — to ask them about things that they can live without and would be willing to sell at auction for charity. All proceeds will go to the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund (eBay is receiving and donating all proceeds and matching every dollar the auction earns). Lifebeat, a nonprofit organization that raises awareness for HIV/AIDS, approached Salt-N-Pepa about joining a partnership they had with Burton Snowboards in 2013. Salt and I have been involved with Lifebeat since the ’90s, helping to spread their message, so saying yes was a no-brainer. We collaborated with the Burton team on the design for a limited-edition run of women’s snowboards and landed on the idea that one side would feature the iconic photo of us wearing the “Push It” jackets and the other side would have graphic text of our lyrics. To us, that was just brilliant.
“Push It” has become my mantra, a Pepa-ism. The lyrics were — and still are — words of encouragement to inspire our fans to keep pushing through pain and hard times they might encounter. Putting them on the snowboard just made sense. When it debuted in 2014, Burton asked if I’d fly out to Denver to support the launch. Of course I said yes. Even though I don’t snowboard — I told them there was no way I would go on the slopes — I was so stoked to be there holding our board. I was told that the snowboard, which was sold at Burton shops, sold out quickly; I’m donating the one I was personally gifted. I’ve always been so proud of it — the collaboration was unlike anything we’d done before — and the board hung in the rec room of my house, amongst all of my awards, for nearly 20 years.
The Strategist is designed to surface the most useful, expert recommendations for things to buy across the vast e-commerce landscape. Some of our latest conquests include the best acne treatments, rolling luggage, pillows for side sleepers, natural anxiety remedies, and bath towels. We update links when possible, but note that deals can expire and all prices are subject to change.
