We asked musician 6LACK— who recently released his third album, Since I Have a Lover — about the designer durag, vinegary hot sauce, and personal humidifier he can’t live without.
It’s a staple for me. It’s something that I enjoy with any meal that I have. I can’t think of a moment when I didn’t use hot sauce for something, so I just keep it on standby for anything. I like Frank’s or Crystal’s. They pretty much take care of what I need as far as a good vinegar-pepper mixture, and those are two of my favorites, but I’m good with anything. The only thing that I don’t do is Texas Pete.
I switched to this right before tour, so it’s been about six months. My girlfriend gave it to me as a gift. I’ve been trying my best to get on this no-aluminum wave. It smells really, really good and works the way that I would expect it to without all the little additives. I got to test it onstage and it works perfectly.
It’s a beautiful scent. It’s a smell that when you walk into a room, someone’s like, Who got the candles? I have one burning in every greenroom and it’s on my rider for every tour stop. I try to have one burning at home too, but they’re a little bit expensive. I recently saved up the courage to buy the big one. It ran out a lot faster than I expected.
It’s a portable humidifier. You put sterile water inside of it or a saline mixture. I have it on the plane, in the hotel, wherever I feel like I need more moisture. I just pop it on, press the button, and it sprays a little mist. I can inhale and exhale as many times as I want.
Nag Champa sets a really good vibe and eases my mind. It calms me down backstage. When I smell it, it makes me want to stretch and take care of myself. I like things that make people ask questions so whenever people smell it, they’re asking questions about the scent and where I got it from. I keep it at home, on the road, in hotels, on the tour bus — everywhere.
I stumbled across this at the Fairfax Flea Market when I first came to L.A. This was 2016 and I was working on my first album. Up until that point, I never had a lotion that I was married to. They have one scent called Mingle that’s sweet, and another, Lavish, that has a lavender scent to it. It has a really good consistency, not super oily. Good for all the things they say body butter is good for. It smells really good. If I didn’t wear cologne or anything, you would probably still want to know what I had on. It’s not strong, but it’s unique.
This has been my go-to for the past two and a half, three years. It’s really expensive, so anytime something goes wrong with it, your heart drops. It allowed me to get back into what I was into before I seriously started doing music. One of the first things I bought with my refund check was a digital camera. Since I’ve been back into film, I’ve been able to build a photo book with memories of my own and not necessarily rely on paying somebody to document everything. I want to see things through my own lens. It’s just super personal. I like taking portraits of other people. I wish I had a version of me to take my own portraits.
It’s the first electric guitar that I’ve taken to and used onstage. People are seeing me learn with it in real time. It feels and looks really good onstage. I always perform with it before we do the last track of the night. I named it Bar Bar after my grandma who passed.
Telfar really did something special with their durags. I ordered it on a whim when it first dropped, and since then I’ve bought over five of each. I’m specific when it comes to durags and scarves and hats, so when I find something that fits, I stick to it. I like the way that it lays and ties. I like length. Sometimes I do little modifications. I’ll trim the cape shorter so when I tie, it isn’t too bulky. I like the black and the brown.
I wear a lot of black and I also have a cat in L.A. I’m around cats a lot in general, so it’s cool to get that fur off your clothes before you have an interview.
