In news we did not see coming, Audrey Gelman has finally emerged with a post-Wing pivot: opening “a country store of homewares from a world far away” that sells antique picnic baskets, $18 jars of blood-orange marmalade, and a whole children’s series worth of whimsy.
Named the Six Bells (notably four fewer than the New York City wine bar), the shop’s conceit centers around the “fictional village” (italics not ours) of Barrow’s Green, which recalls a thatch-roofed hamlet in Suffolk where Londoners might go to play serf for the weekend. There’s a map you can hover over to learn about Barrow’s Green’s various stately homes (and the vicar’s ghost that haunts the bell tower) as well as a whole cast of characters, each with their own very fleshed-out bio.
If you can get past the intensive creative-writing exercise, there are some quite good products to be had — that is, if your taste aligns with Matilda Goad, French country, and/or Vermont (the whole state). Our personal highlights include olive-oil soap molded to resemble a bunch of grapes, wooden bookends shaped like Lemony Snicket cottages, and a $60 hand-painted vintage cow with a beatific smile. And should the fancifulness not be palpable enough for you, there’s a brick-and-mortar location at 221 Court Street in Brooklyn, where you can presumably pet pink corduroy cushions and sniff crackling-wick candles.
