Here at the Strategist, we like to think of ourselves as crazy (in the good way) about the stuff we buy, but as much as we’d like to, we can’t try everything. Which is why we have People’s Choice, in which we find the best-reviewed products and single out the most convincing ones. (You can learn more about our rating system and how we pick each item here.)

And while we’ve written about lots of furniture before — including the best coffee tables, the best couches under $2,000, and the best love seats — here, we’ve rounded up the best leather recliner, as praised by the most enthusiastic reviewers on Amazon.

Best-rated (and less expensive) leather recliner

FDW advertises these leather chairs as slim, theater-style recliners, which made some customers wary of how comfortable they’d be. “I wasn’t expecting much, but then I sat down and fell asleep in a matter of minutes. It’s very very comfortable. A bit slim but still cushiony and relaxing,” one customer writes. Another reviewer owns six of them: “Yes they are slim BUT they fit a range of sizes and are incredibly easy to put together and move around.” Many even bought these recliners for their home theater because, after all, they are theater chairs. One calls these “honestly, the perfect home theater chair” and immediately purchased eight, explaining, “The build quality is good, but you won’t find a better chair until you pay much, much more. Comfortable, functional, good looking AND affordable. These chairs are a no-brainer.”

And now for some micro-picks for every type of leather recliner you might be looking for.

Best cushioned leather recliner

This traditional leather recliner scored high marks for being well-cushioned. “I have fallen asleep on it several times,” says one reviewer, adding, “It’s long enough that I can fully stretch out on it, and it’s so comfortable. Very springy (in a good way) seat, soft cushions but not so soft that they feel like they will wear quickly. It makes zero noise when I sit on it.” Another writes, “None of that overstuffed cushion that pushes your head forward. Comfortable from top to bottom.” And a third describes this as “comfortable and affordable,” but also notes that it’s extremely durable, explaining, “The cat is not wrecking it thus far. He has clawed it a few times but it has not left noticeable damage.” They also add, “It does recline enough to sleep on all night, so is good for random guests who want to snooze.” Some customers dislike that the leather is stiff at first, but as this reviewer says, “I think it will soften a little with time.”

Best power lift leather recliner

“Oh my stars, I cannot tell you how awesome this lift recliner is,” writes one customer. “It has no problem lifting me out of the chair to a standing position. It is whisper quiet. I cannot say enough of how this has helped so much with my surgery recovery.” And many more reviewers express how much this recliner improved their recovery process. One customer purchased this for her husband recovering from double knee replacements, writing, “Well, based on my husband’s report, it turned out to be perfect. The lift feature is very helpful for him, especially on the days he is feeling more tired than usual. He reports it is quite comfortable. When the motor for lift and recline is activated, it is very quiet.” A few dislike that it’s not real leather, but one reviewer thinks that it “actually feels better as it’s much softer and not sticky like vinyl.” Another thinks the material makes it “firm,” but also adds, “It’s not like a cloud where you “sink” in, but you feel very supported. The chair is far from hard. Saying its firm can make you think hard, but it’s more supportive yet extremely comfortable.”

Best leather recliner for big and tall customers

Several big and tall reviewers lament over how many recliners don’t suit their larger frames — but write that this Lane leather recliner does. “For a big/tall guy, I’ve never sat in a better recliner! It’s stiff (which I like) and very well supported,” says one customer. Another describes himself as, “an extra-large guy and I destroy medium to light duty chairs,” but describes this recliner as, “pretty study. I can recline all the way back with confidence that it won’t snap in half.” A handful of buyers were even long-time La-Z-Boy customers but think this recliner is better. One reviewer appreciates that this is “specifically designed for big and tall users,” writing, “The construction of the chair delivered on the promise in the description: It is steady as a rock, the seat comes all the way to the back of my knees, and the foot rest extends beyond my heels, meaning my calves are not bearing the weight of my legs. I am 6’1” and weigh 360 pounds. I paid the same price as my La-Z-Boy that is far less able to hold my weight.”

Best leather recliner with ottoman

“You cannot beat the price for the type of quality you get with this chair and ottoman,” says one customer, and many more appreciate that this recliner comes with an ottoman instead of a built-in footrest because it gives the chair more versatility. “I like the swivel feature and fact I can use the ottoman or not. I find for reading and TV these are great chairs,” writes one reviewer who also advises, “They sit a bit low so if you are older and have trouble sitting or getting up then you might want to consider recliner that is higher off the ground. If you want to lay back and snooze then probably not the right recliner for you either.” One more chose this option from Flash Furniture because he “did not want to go with a traditional recliner,” writing, “My feet hang off and they are always subpar in quality. This chair with separate ottoman is more comfortable and is of higher quality with less bulk.” Overall, one reviewer says, “The ottoman is also comfortable, light, easy to move, great looking, well designed/built, and serves as a great spare seat for short conversations or when putting on shoes.”
