If you’re like us, you’ve probably wondered what famous people add to their carts. Not the JAR brooch and Louis XV chair, but the hand sanitizer and the electric toothbrush. We asked model, actress, and burlesque dancer Dita Von Teese about the agenda, blender, and sea salt she can’t live without.
I like to eat eggs because I feel like they’re one of the easiest things to make for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. My favorite thing to do is take smoked sea salt or truffle sea salt and sprinkle it on — it’s a really inexpensive way to make scrambled eggs feel luxurious. I actually have a sea salt wardrobe of favorite salts, and the smokier, the better. I love smoky foods like lapsang souchong tea and smoked coconut bacon or smoked shiitake mushrooms.
I’ve been using one of these every year for the past 15 years. I still love writing down my day-to-day in pencil. My friends will actually make fun of me because I always have a number two pencil for writing down my schedule. In the back of the agenda, I’ll write goals and quotes I want to remember. It’s also just a very luxurious thing. It’s beautiful paper and beautifully bound. I have my initials stamped on it. I actually have a full library of them from past years — if I have to figure out what I was doing five years ago on whatever particular date, I can look at my diary and find it.
I’m not even a big blow-dryer person — I’m more of a hot rollers gal — but this is a game changer. When I tried it the first time, I was like, “I can talk to people over this. I can hear what’s happening in the room.” It changed my beauty routine and is now a staple. It’s also become a go-to gift for anyone in my life who’s done something extra special.
A while ago I started thinking more about the beauty products I was using and the chemicals in the things I was putting on my face — someone told me about Eminence products, and I started trying all of them. I really love them all, but this treatment cream is one of my favorites because the smell really reminds me of my childhood, though I couldn’t tell you what it is. I use it every day thinking the memory will come back. I love the dewy feeling, too, and when I’m going on tour I will throw that jar of cream into my bag and use it night and day.
I was in London recently performing at the Palladium, and stayed with a girlfriend, Fiona Leahy, who’s the one I always look to for fashion inspiration. One night she came out wearing this cashmere onesie, and I liked it so much I took a picture of her wearing it and put it on Instagram. The next thing you know I had one, too. With all the things I wear for work — the belts and corsets — nothing feels better than putting on a cashmere onesie at the end of the day. It’s become my most treasured piece of clothing because it feels like a holiday. I never thought of myself as a onesie kind of gal but it’s pretty chic and streetwear-ready.
Of all my friends who’ve used a Theragun [editor’s note: we’ve written about this before], ten of them have gone and bought it after they experienced it. I was going to physical therapy before my tour this summer because I’d had some lower back issues, and my physical therapist pulled out the Theragun, and my life was changed. I got one immediately and even got one engraved. I use it on tour, and everyone passes it around. It’s a power tool that really gets the knots out. I don’t know about you, but my partner is like, “If I have to give you another foot massage …” But he’s not tired of using the Theragun on me. It’s not one of those “back massagers” that’s meant for something else either. It’s the real deal percussive therapy.
I’m a big fan of the green smoothie, so I pretty much use my Vitamix every morning. I’ll blend 80 percent greens and 20 percent fruit to make a quick breakfast before my workout. I’ll even cook with the Vitamix to make blended and raw soups or grind nuts for flour. It’s like another thing I never really realized would make my life so much easier. I was used to blenders that would never really crush ice that would make me wonder if I was going to break the thing, and with the Vitamix, it’s like, “This is how it should be.” Even when I was on tour I had a little rolling bag created for my Vitamix so I could bring it around in style.
My striptease candle! One of my really close friends and I have similar tastes in everything — home décor, clothes, design, fragrance — and we love exotic and obscure and even strange and polarizing fragrances and so we came up with this idea of making a striptease candle. He made the technology so that when the candle heats up, the clothes fall off — then the clothes come back when it cools. You have to burn the whole the candle to get to the whole naughty bits with the illusion of nudity. The fragrance is great, too.
