If you’re like us, you’ve probably wondered what famous people add to their carts. Not the JAR brooch and Louis XV chair but the hair spray and the electric toothbrush. We asked professional tennis player Frances Tiafoe — who, in June, became the third Black American to be ranked in the top ten of men’s singles players on the ATP tour — about the energy bars he eats during matches, the cologne he wears every day, and the Hershey’s candy that satisfies his sweet tooth.
I’ve been playing with Yonex racquets since I was 18, so I’ve been with them for a while. I definitely take them wherever I go, especially when I’m training, and I feel like I can do anything with this racquet: I’m an all-court player and I’m an aggressive baseliner and I can come forward at my best. I definitely have all the shots and a lot of tools in the tool bag. And for my game, this racquet has it all — control, power, finesse. It’s kind of the perfect racquet.
I’m a big shoehead. I love to have some heat on the feet. I make sure to rock my Nikes anytime I’m not on the court. I’ve been loving the Travis Scott lows. I just got the new Tiffanys — those are tough. I’ve been loving the Dunks lately too. But you can’t go wrong with a pair of Jordan 1s; you’re always solid with those. They have just the best look. I have them in all different colors — I like to mix it up.
Clif Bars, baby. I take ’em everywhere I go. I eat them during matches, and they fuel me unbelievably when I’m playing. I always gotta make sure I’m fueled up and ready to go, man. I really like the white chocolate macadamia nut one. It’s very good. I just opened up a big box of them when I got home yesterday and had them during practice. They also have great Bloks that taste like candy.
If you’re really trying to hear the heat in the headphones, man, you gotta put the Beats on. They’re tough. I like to rock out with the Beats when I’m walking onto the court or moving through the airport. When I’m warming up on court, I use them to get in the zone. I like to listen to it all, but I’m usually listening to Lil Baby, Kendrick Lamar, Drake. It depends on the vibe, where my headspace is at.
I split my time training out of Washington, D.C., and Florida, and it has been hot as hell out there these days. I gotta put it on and protect my skin — I’m just looking out for longevity. It just feels good on my skin, and it’s easily absorbed. It doesn’t get in my eyes. I use it especially when I’m playing, but I also apply it when I’m chilling poolside.
Jo Malone! I’ve always been into different colognes and sprays, and I like the smell of this one from Jo Malone. It’s kind of sweet and refreshing. I wear it every day.
I love Hershey’s Cookies ‘n’ Creme, that’s my thing. But for any kids who tune into this … I’d say my favorite candy is asparagus or something, so they can eat healthy.
I always have some candy around me; I have a horrible sweet tooth. Another candy I really like is the Reese’s white cups — not the dark cups.
I’m a classic millennial, man. I’m always on the phone. But if I lose my phone, you know, don’t talk to me. It’s a bad day. I gotta go to the Apple store, get it all sorted out. But most of the time, I’m glued to my phone. I’m always on the usual: Instagram (come on, I’m a 25-year-old!), YouTube, Twitter obviously. And the United app — you gotta keep track of those United miles. Those are important.
