What Mixed-Martial Artist Georges St-Pierre Can’t Live Without

If you’re like us, you’ve probably wondered what famous people add to their carts. Not the JAR brooch and Louis XV chair but the hairspray and the electric toothbrush. We asked mixed martial artist Georges St-Pierre — a spokesman for footwear brand Royer and star of Marvel’s miniseries The Falcon and the Winter Soldier out now on Disney+ — about the toothbrush, chocolate, and lip balm he can’t live without.

Chocolate is my weakness. I love everything chocolate: chocolate cake, chocolate bars, chocolate ice cream. If it has chocolate in it, I will love it. But Lindt is my absolute favorite. I’m a big fan of its milk chocolate. People always say to me, “Oh, I thought that you are someone who is really healthy?” I am healthy, but I like to live my life and be happy. There are a lot of natural pleasures in life, and eating is one of my natural pleasures, especially when I’m eating chocolate. I will not feel completely happy if I can’t have it.

I’m a bit of an excessive person — I give everything at 110 percent, which is sometimes a problem. When I brush my teeth with a normal toothbrush, I give it my all and I damage my gums. My dentist pointed this out to me. He said, “Georges, you’re damaging your gums by going too hard with the toothbrush.” He suggested I get an electric toothbrush, since you don’t really need to do anything but move it around your mouth. My dentist recommended this one. It cleans really well and my gums feel a lot better.

You need lip balm during winters Montreal, where I live, because it’s so cold. This is my favorite. I’ve tried many brands; I don’t know what it is about this one, but I think it lasts the longest of any lip balm I’ve used. Some brands I think try to create an addiction by making your lips dry out faster so you have to constantly reapply or they’ll feel itchy. People tell me my mind is playing tricks on me — and maybe it is — but once I started using this brand, I didn’t get that sensation anymore.

Water is a very important part of my life. Not only because I drink it, but because I use it for cold immersion baths as well. I’ve done a lot of research and talked to experts and now I believe the baths boost my immune system, reduce my inflammation, and burn my fat. I think they help my moods, too. I typically take ice baths in the barrel four mornings a week, but I’ve also started to do a form of hot-and-cold therapy before bed. I’ll go in my Jacuzzi, then take an ice bath in the barrel for a few minutes, then get back in the Jacuzzi, then get back in the barrel again. I’ve noticed it actually helps me sleep better at night and I wake up feeling really good in the morning.

I got this because I knew I wasn’t sleeping enough and, even when I was, I wasn’t getting consistently good sleep. Sometimes I would be in bed for 12 hours, but wake up feeling like I only slept for four. Other times, I would sleep for seven hours and feel really good when I woke up. I was wondering why that was happening, so I started reading a lot of books about sleep and decided to monitor mine. The Oura ring does that very well. It tells me how much deep sleep and REM sleep I get. I’ve learned a lot about my own sleeping habits from this ring. For example, if I eat red meat before bed, I normally don’t have a good night’s sleep. If I do my ice bath–Jacuzzi routine, I sleep well. Monitoring my sleep has helped me better understand it and the ring tells me what I can do to improve.

In 2017, I was diagnosed with a condition called ulcerative colitis, which is an inflammatory condition in the intestines. I was on heavy medication for a brief period of time, but I’m not a big fan of medication. I always look for natural ways to improve my health instead. So I did a lot of research and found out that fasting was one of the components that helped a lot of people with this condition. I usually do water fasts, which means I don’t consume any calories and just drink water for certain periods of time — normally, three to five days in a row. I also practice intermittent fasting or time-restricted eating pretty much every day. I consume all of my calories within an eight-hour window; outside of that window, I only drink water. But I learned that when I do this, it’s important that I don’t deplete my minerals because I’m training even when fasting. Your body is like a sponge and when I train, I sweat a lot, and that sweat contains minerals — losing too many makes me cramp and get dizzy. So my doctor, Dr. Jason Fung, who is very well known in the world of fasting, suggested that I take Himalayan salt as a solution. I put about a third of a teaspoon of this Himalayan salt in the palm of my hand and just lick it. It helps my body retain water and minerals while I’m working out.

Coffee is a part of my everyday life. I think it makes me sharper. It gives me that boost I need to function at a higher level, especially when I’m training. I like honey and cream in it, but when I’m fasting, my doctor told me I should take it black. This brand tastes really good when I drink it black.

These boots have a beautiful design and are very, very comfortable. I use them for everything: errands, shoveling snow, cleaning my backyard. I literally wear them all the time. Not all comfortable shoes look nice. Even if something is comfortable, it’s important to me that it looks good, too. I believe that if you look good, you will feel good, and if you feel good, you will do good. I feel good in these boots. I think they’re stylish, even if I’m just shoveling snow.
