If you’re like us, you’ve probably wondered what famous people add to their carts. Not the JAR brooch and Louis XV chair but the hair spray and the electric toothbrush. Jessica Alba, actress and founder of the Honest Company, talked to us about the olive oil and seasoned salt she puts on everything, the jeans she stole from her daughter, and the sleep-improving smart ring that “yells” at her.
I’ve been an actress since I was 12. I’ve lived in so many hotels and random places, so I always bring salt with me when I travel. Jane’s Krazy Mixed-up Salt is my favorite. It’s a seasoned salt, and it makes everything taste better. A friend of mine that my husband grew up with brought it over one day. We stole it and used it so fast that now we buy it all the time. I’ve always tried to incorporate a lot of flavor and spice in most things I make. Who wants bland food?
I love to cook with Brightland. I’ve tried so many of their flavors and their vinegars, but it’s kind of a problem because I go through it way too fast. I couldn’t even tell you how much I go through specifically. I put it on literally everything, from pasta to veggies. I make dressings and marinades with it. They’re all super versatile and taste great, but their chili one is so delicious. Jalapeños were a staple at my dinner table growing up. We would throw them on practically everything: turkey at Thanksgiving, guacamole and salsa, omelets, breakfast tacos. I grew up always having a little bit of chili flavor. And now, I still love to incorporate these flavors into my cooking. My kids love it, too.
They have some surprisingly great clothes on Amazon. I saw these and thought they were so cute. I originally got them for my daughter Honor because I thought they would look good on her, but when they arrived, I tried them on just to see how they fit. And I never gave them to her. They’re really stylish but comfortable. I share stuff occasionally with Honor, but she tells me when I wear stuff that she also likes, I make it look like a mom thing, whereas she looks like a cool teenager. I’m like, “Well, that’s super rude.”
I make a lot of crepes. It’s a really fun thing to have for breakfast or dinner. And my kids love it, regardless if I make savory or sweet ones. They’re easier to make with a crepe pan than a regular frying pan or whatnot, because you can get the size and consistency just right. I’ve been working on my technique.
I have a bunch of piercings, so I love earrings. I found this really cool brand on Instagram, Verie, that was started by Valeria Lipovetsky, actually. She’s a mom of three and so funny and super fashionable. When we got together, she told me about her fashion and jewelry line, and I was so in love with everything she made. I always gravitate towards her kind of business, too: It’s handmade with an ethical supply chain, and it’s very creative. I love her simple gold hoops and huggies. They’re really beautiful and great everyday pieces.
This is a more functional piece of jewelry. I wasn’t getting good sleep for a bit, and I travel a lot. This keeps track of my sleep so I know what’s working for me and what isn’t. It also reminds me to get up and walk around. It yells at me, which is nice. I need that. I think my sleep has improved a lot since I started using it.
These T-shirts are awesome. I own them in all sorts of colors. They’re super flattering and cute, but they’re so comfortable. I wear them on planes. I wear them to run errands. I wear them to sleep. I wear them literally any time I can. They’re the best.
A lot of melting balms out there have petroleum and chemicals and synthetic fragrances that can clog your pores. While they have a great texture, depending on your skin type, you can actually react to it. I wanted this one to work for all different types of skin — dry skin, eczema, psoriasis, anything. It’s made with mondo grass and hyaluronic acid to hydrate the skin, and allantoin, which is an amazing healing ingredient. It also contains our calming phyto blend, which helps support the skin barrier. I just did a movie in the high deserts of New Mexico. It went from being 110 degrees to 38 degrees at the end of filming, and I was flying back and forth from home every week to be with my kids and work with my Honest team. The melting balm saved my skin during this time. I put on my fuzzy headband to keep my hair back, then literally slathered it in the morning and at night and just let it penetrate my skin.
