What Florist Ryan Norville Can’t Live Without

If you’re like us, you’ve probably wondered what famous people add to their carts. Not the JAR brooch and Louis XV chair but the hair spray and the electric toothbrush. We asked florist Ryan Norville — the founder of floral studio Oat Cinnamon — about the sunscreen, water bottle, and apple juice she can’t live without.

I tend to gravitate toward wearing a uniform, so finding a good basic is everything to me. I discovered Baserange through a small Brooklyn boutique. They make basics that are so soft. Most of the things are cotton — I have a skin allergy where I can only wear natural fibers. I own two or three of these tanks.

This helps keep everything in one place in a beautiful way. One of the hardest parts about working from home and having all my supplies at home is that they can make my place look ugly. This is an organizer, but also décor. It’s pretty and people are intrigued by it when they come over.

I’ve had several crises with laptops frying, but they’ve never been huge issues because all of my files and artwork are on the hard drive. I own a few LaCie hard drives, and they’ve literally saved my life.

I got the subscription during the pandemic because I was looking to cook more from home. I was so tired of making the same things over and over again. I’m a naturally good cook but I ran out of recipes. I’d see friends of mine who would cook amazing things; I assumed they were just better cooks than me, but they’d always say, “Dude, I got this from the New York Times.” The subscription has been key to getting more creative in my kitchen. It includes weekly emails that tell you what to cook. During the week they’ll send suggestions for things that are quicker to make. On weekends, the recipes are more experimental and require a little more effort.

I don’t wear makeup every day, just sunscreen and that’s it. But it was really difficult for me to find sunscreen that wasn’t pasty. This serum has SPF and makes my skin glow without looking sweaty.

I have trouble drinking water if it’s not cold and right in front of my face. Water stays cold all day in this. It’s 64 ounces and my goal is to drink two of them a day. Even if I don’t drink two whole bottles, it’s still a lot of water. With a 32-ounce bottle, I find water gets stale and lukewarm and I also have to fill it up four times if I want to drink a gallon.

I always say to my husband that if he cuts me open, I might bleed apple juice. I wanted apple juice from the moment I got pregnant — and the craving didn’t stop after our son, Ciel, was born. One day during my second trimester, I got this sparkling version from my local deli. It’s so crisp and light. I feel fancy drinking it. Now I go there with a tote bag and clear them out. It’s not the same as the Martinelli’s you get in the fake Champagne bottle. There’s something about it; it has a little more kick. I give it to all my pregnant friends because it doesn’t feel like a compromise when you can’t have Champagne.

I’ve owned a lot of luxury candles and many of them don’t pay off in the scent department. This one really fills a room. It smells warm and woodsy with a little touch of cinnamon. You would think that would only be appropriate for the holidays, but I burn it in my house all year long.

I have to write everything down. I’m a list person. I’m also a stationery geek. I’m always buying pretty notebooks and stationery, even if I don’t have uses for them. I keep this notebook by my bed at night. I write in it after I meditate and use it to record my dreams. Mine has gridded pages — all of my notebooks are gridded because I’m really particular about handwriting. Without a grid, I’m lost.

I’m also super-particular about pens. They have to be a certain thickness — 0.5mm is great for me — and they have to be black ink. I have one of these sitting in a pouch at the top of my organizer so I always see its little head popping up.
