For this installment of the Guest Strat Haul, artist and co-founder of Beboe, Scott Campbell, tells us what he bought in December.
I want, as I imagine most parents do, for my kids to grow up to be powerful, willful, brilliant confident people. It’s so hard to know the appropriate way to correct bad behavior in kids in a way that doesn’t break their will. A friend recommended this book, and it’s been incredibly helpful in establishing boundaries with my 4-year-old without making her feel like I’m disappointed in her or imposing judgment.
Legacy Foods makes better-than-horrible–tasting emergency food for long-term storage. They have a decent assortment of meal options, all made from whole foods, minimally processed and organic when possible. It’s all vegetarian-friendly and has a shelf life of 25 years. You never know.
My right foot was crushed in a motorcycle accident a few years back. Five surgeries and a bucket of titanium parts later, I have a mostly usable foot. After everything, I’m a bit limited in what shoes I can wear comfortably. The best fit and support I’ve found are Salomon XA’s. The lacing system and way it tightens around the midfoot is perfect. However, I think it’s admirable that Nike has made it a point to take such a public position in their support of athletes like Colin Kaepernick and Justin Gallegos. While their shoes don’t work for me, I do appreciate what they’re doing, so I painted swooshes on the sides of my Salomons. (Those are mine above.)
Goal Zero makes great large-scale batteries. This one can allegedly power a full-size refrigerator for 24 hours or an assortment of smaller appliances for longer. It’s coupled with a folding solar panel for recharging, so it’s great for running emergency lights, a small fridge for food, and an electric kettle for boiling water. It’s silent in case you don’t want anyone discovering your location, too.
Another important tool in my “dad arsenal” are these pastilles. My daughter loves them, and I can sometimes get up to two or three days of good behavior with the promise of just a couple of these little gems. It’s like gold bullion to 4 year olds.
Olight makes great flashlights. They made a limited run of their top models out of solid copper and they’re beautiful.
I know it’s such a cliché dad move to default to pancakes whenever it’s my turn to make breakfast, but if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. I recently got a bunch of this paleo pancake mix, and the kids love it. The instructions on the bag say “just add water” but I’ve found if you substitute water with milk and eggs and a bunch of butter, they’re much better.
