This roundup of things we liked this week originally appeared in the June 6, 2024, edition of the Secret Strategist newsletter, a weekly email where we share the stuff our staff — plus a rotating cast of writers, design-world people, and various others with very good taste — would otherwise keep to themselves. If you want to get our picks straight to your inbox each week, sign up here.
We found so many good things this week that we had to stop ourselves from just buying it all up instead of saving it for you people! —Katy Schneider and Simone Kitchens
This Week’s List
*We were already eyeing this perfect Christian Liaigre sofa when we saw Sophie Buhai post from the lobby of the Mercer with the caption “Christian Liaigre heaven.” (He designed the hotel, thus the inspiring abundance of his furniture.) Some other nice ones from the designer available around the internet right now: this incredibly sexy red sofa on 1stDibs, this soft gray daybed. And for something in the same vein as the sofa but cheaper, this Liaigre-ish chair by — of all people — James Perse is nice.
* We know three people who just bought this purple J.Crew sweater. It’s a very nice color and apparently has a perfectly soft, rounded shoulder. (But also, if you’re thinking of summer sweaters, there’s always our favorite: the Shaggy Dog. Or you could get a GORGEOUS purple vintage William Lockie!)
* We spotted a pair of intriguing shoes buried in Paloma Elsesser’s Instagram. They appear to be Adidas Chen Tao. In white here. There was another pair in red, but sorry — we bought them!
Editor’s note: Coupled Roof lists all prices in euros, so the price shown is an approximate conversion to U.S. dollars.
* Dakota Johnson has been filming in a flouncy dress and some Nike Daybreaks, which look great. (Everyone has been ID’ing them as Cortezes, but they’re not.)
* In other-things-we-saw-people-wearing, Emily Weiss posted a picture of her friend in a pair of simple, kind of elevated-looking jean shorts. Some sleuthing reveals they’re these, from Saks Potts.
* Second summer in a row we’re pulling out these strappy, weirdly sexy little Tevas!
* In Common With, the maker of very appealing chandeliers, pendants, floor lamps, surface mounts, etc., opened a furniture–home-goods store called Quarters. Nothing is available online, but suffice it to say, this place is overflowing with handsome items, few of which are less than $1,000. We’re attracted to the iron seahorse sconce, though we’re sorry to report it is $7,750, and the red-corduroy-and-sapele bed frame, which we’re sorry to report is $20,000.
* The good Nordic Knots — burgundy and striped — is back in stock in the big-but-still-under-$1,000 size: five feet by eight feet.
*And on the subject of rugs: Sharktooth, one of the city’s best rug stores, is closing! Really sad, but there’s a 30-percent-off sale through July 1.
* Lastly, guy with great taste Dan Solomito told us about an excellent Japanese brand, Sillage. (He just bought an apron vest from the company. But honestly, all its stuff is pretty great: Great orange cargo pants, great Supima-cotton button-downs, great twill straight-legs, great simple jackets, cool shoes …) He also says he recently bought a Montbell hat he’s happy about for runs, hikes, etc. (We’re generally big fans of Montbell.) And he bought the first dining chair from Willett, Molly Baz’s husband’s line. (Dan is very excited about this chair.)
