As you guys know by now, I love Supergoop. Not only are their products cruelty- and paraben-free, but the brand seems to be constantly figuring out ways to integrate sunscreen into your beauty routine. They have straightforward sunscreens like their Everyday Sunscreen for the face and body, and their Skin Soothing Mineral Sunscreen, which is perfect for people with sensitive skin, but my favorite products of theirs have always been their SPF-infused-makeup items. I’ve long adored their Glow Stick (an SPF 50–infused, super-dewy highlight stick that makes me look like I just left the spa), their Perk Up Lip and Cheek Tint (a subtle, tinted, creamy red blush with SPF 40 that was recently, tragically discontinued), and their SPF Setting Powder (which lives in my purse and makes touching up my UV protection throughout the day insanely easy). Thanks to Supergoop, in other words, I am never without coverage: I apply my Purito Centella SPF in the morning, then retouch with the Glow Stick, Perk Up, and Setting powder throughout the day.
A couple of weeks ago, Supergoop launched Shimmershades, the first-ever SPF-infused eye shadow. Let me first talk about the formula and how much I like it: The stuff is creamy and blendable and, best of all, requires little to no effort to apply (you just brush it on with your finger and you’re done). These eye shadows have a beautiful, subtle, shimmery sheen — not an attention-grabbing glitter or sparkle — that’s perfect for achieving that everyday, your-eyes-but-brighter, soft, twinkly effect. I’ve been wearing the shade Golden Hour nonstop: It’s a lovely pale gold that really emphasizes the color of my eyes. (If I’m going for a taupe-y smokey eye, I combine Golden Hour with Sunset, a darker, more bronze-y shade.) Even if they didn’t have SPF in them, I would love the creamy formula and gorgeous wearable pigment.
But they do have SPF. You may or may not know that the area around your eyes is extremely delicate — the skin is ultra-thin, which means it’s more susceptible to dark spots and wrinkles and serious UV damage. These SPF-30 eye shadows also incorporate rose extract (a potent source of vitamins B3, C, and E, which help fight free-radical damage), as well as Roman chamomile (which calms and soothes the skin), plus sunflower extract (which delivers essential fatty acids and vitamin E to keep the skin moisturized). When you put a dab of this very pretty eye shadow on your lids, you are ensuring they get the protection from the sun they need. It’s a delightful twofer.
Other Rio-approved eye shadows
For going out, Rio’s favorite eye shadow is this two-toned, metallic, coppery eye-shadow duo from Fenty. “This has single-handedly made getting glam before going out the easiest it’s ever been,” she says.
Rio loves every single thing about this Ohii palette, from the formula (“so creamy”) to the pigments (“deep and long-lasting”) to the colors ("every single one is to die for”). “The formula is so creamy, the pigments are so deep and long-lasting, and the colors are to die for,” she says.
When putting together a glossy-lid look, Rio likes using these single-color eye shadows from NYX. “My favorite of theirs is the yellow,” she says, “which for some reason is called STFU.”
