If you’re like us, you’ve probably wondered what famous people add to their carts. Not the JAR brooch and Louis XV chair but the hand sanitizer and the electric toothbrush. We asked actress Zoey Deutch — who recently partnered with La Mer for the launch of its new Eye Concentrate — about the garlic salt, coffee creamer, and lingerie she can’t live without.
My grandmother passed this salt secret on to my mother, who then passed it on to me. I don’t carry the salt with me, but my grandmother did. It’s the greatest salt of all time — even more salty than regular salt. It’s like salt on salt on salt. I love to cook, and this makes pretty much most things taste great. I make a lot of pasta, and it’s great with that, or with steak or chicken. The reality of the situation is that I’ll put it on anything. Those who know the salt know, and those who don’t know should go and get some.
This has nothing to do with my garlic-salt obsession, because when I want something just to help with my breath, I’ll use Listerine strips. Gum is something totally different — I’m always chewing it. I wish I didn’t — I know it’s bad for the environment and probably for me, too — but I’m addicted. I’ve tried all the gum out there, and this is the best one, in my opinion. I chew it all the time. People will sometimes call me out because I’ll be chewing gum and drinking a glass of wine, and they’ll be like, “Zoey, you can’t do that.” And I’m like, “I didn’t even realize that I was chewing it!”
This is the first thing I buy when I move to a new city while on location for a job, because the creamer is literally in every drugstore and bodega and chain grocery store. It makes me immediately feel like I’m at home because I have it in my coffee every day in L.A. It’s something my parents used, and I just adopted that from them. The vanilla ones are way too sweet, and I don’t like regular creamer. I don’t even think I like hazelnut. I mean, I guess I must, but I never buy anything else that’s hazelnut-flavored.
I have been accused of only drinking sparkling water. I love Pellegrino. I love pamplemousse La Croix. I love anything that’s sparkling, but the best of the best is from a SodaStream, which is so much better for the environment. You waste less bottles — plastic, glass, everything. And it’s so much cheaper in the long run. If I’m on location for a long time, like four months, I’ll bring mine with me. Pro tip: If you take your empty CO2 cartridges to Bed Bath and Beyond, you’ll get a discount on a new one.
The weirdest thing about becoming famous is that the more money you make, the more free stuff you get. But I don’t think Diptyque gives anything for free, at least not to me. I’m the person who literally goes to Diptyque on my birthday because I can get a free mini candle. My favorite is the fig scent that I can’t pronounce. Don’t you dare ask me to pronounce it. I don’t know what it is about the fig one — I don’t think I’ve ever even smelled a fig to confidently say, ah, yes, this is so figlike to me — but it smells so good. I’m very cautious about burning it; before I light it, I’m like, okay, do I really need to use this right now? It’s silly, but I have to convince myself that I deserve to light the candle because it’s so precious to me.
What your mother said about beauty coming from the inside is completely true. You need to heal yourself from the inside; you can’t just use products for your skin to look and feel your best. This wellness formula was a real game changer for me. I have a tricky, funky immune system, and I also travel a lot, which just doesn’t help. I am that person who is always hand-sanitizing and wiping down my airplane seat. I get colds and flus very easily; if I don’t take proper precautions, I’m sick every couple of months. But taking this formula has really helped. I take six capsules a day — three in the morning and three at night. It’s sort of like a one-stop shop for me, because it contains the right combination of herbs and antioxidants and vitamins and minerals to boost my immune system.
I don’t know anything about bras, except that this one is perfect. I don’t even know where I found it; it’s from a kind-of-random Australian brand, but is the only bra I’ve worn for three years. It’s a little pricey but so worth it — it’s comfortable and supportive and also happens to be really beautiful. I own it in black, white, blue, red, and pink. I think that may be all the colors they have. The only pain about the bras is that you can’t wash them: You have to take them to the dry cleaner or hand-wash them. But I still recommend them.
A makeup artist, Kelsey Deenihan, told me about this foundation, and now I make every makeup artist I ever meet get it. You can’t buy it easily — I think it’s only available online at Selfridges and a few obscure places. I’m good with whatever eyeshadow, brow stuff, or powder that makeup artists want to use, but this is the only foundation I will put on my face because otherwise I usually break out. It just works for my skin, so I bring it with me on every shoot and every movie.
When I wrapped filming Buffaloed, I got nine hours of sleep for the first time in a long time. But I woke up with the worst dark circles I’d had in months — even worse than those I’d wake up with after two hours of sleep and eating lots of salt the night before. I was frustrated when I realized that my eyes are generally puffier and darker when I sleep more. I don’t know if anyone else has that experience, but I definitely need eye cream in order to keep it under control. I’ve been using the La Mer Eye Concentrate every day for a few months. It’s soothing and hydrating. I know people think of La Mer as a brand that only fancy people use, but I came to the understanding that it is worth the investment after seeing a difference in my skin. I think it really reduced the dark circles under my eyes, regardless of how much I sleep. It also doesn’t make me break out — that and whether I like a product are more important to me than any brand’s reputation.
