Barack Obama on His Mom Jeans: ‘I’m a Little Frumpy’

Barack Obama was on the Today show this morning to discuss all kinds of important challenges facing our nation. Meredith Vieira, bless her heart, made a brilliant segue from the battle Barack wages in trying to pass new regulatory measures for the financial-services industry to the borderline Mom jeans the president wore last week when throwing out the first pitch at the All-Star Game. She noted that the “fashion police” — us included — were not impressed with his short, baggy pants. “I heard they were cracking on my jeans!” Barack said. “You are married to one of the most fashionable women in the world — do you want to defend the pants?” Meredith asked pointedly. Barack responded:

“No. Here’s my attitude. Michelle — she looks fabulous. I’m a little frumpy. Basically, up until a few years ago, I only had four suits. She used to tease me ‘cause they’d get really shiny. I hate to shop. Those jeans are comfortable, and for those of you who want your president to look great in his tight jeans, I’m sorry — I’m not the guy.”

He wears clothes because they’re comfortable? What is he — some sort of dad? Oh, right. But this quote proves he is at least aware of skinny pants, and perhaps their rising popularity. No one expects the president to waltz into JCPenney like it’s Five Guys and order up a hot new pair of pants as tight as Zac Efron’s. But that doesn’t mean he can’t try something a little darker, a little longer, and just a tiny bit slimmer. Surely Michelle’s aide can add an extra item to her basket the next time he or she online shops at J.Crew.
