Cape Cod, Massachusetts A converted lighthouse brightens the island.

Beach-cottage rentals? No thanks. Grocery shopping,
cooking, and cleaning the kitchen should
not be in your vacation vocabulary. You can do all
those things without leaving home (and for a lot less
money). Cape Cod’s Lighthouse Inn, owned and run
by the Stone family since 1938, is a low-key,
kid-friendly, full-service resort. It’s also a
working lighthouse, built in 1855. The dining
room—where guests gather for generous
buffet-style breakfasts, light lunches, and New
England–style dinners such as creamy clam
chowder, steamed lobster, and prime rib—has
memorable views of Nantucket Sound. From late June
through August, the West Dennis inn offers daily
supervised activities for children 3 and up. The
private beach, heated swimming pool, miniature-golf
course, and game room are great for kids. Dads will
like the five public eighteen-hole golf courses
nearby. And the whole family can take the ferry from
Hyannis to Martha’s Vineyard or Nantucket, or
drive past Chatham to the National Seashore for
beach-combing, sand-castle building, and swimming.
