Top 10 Hamptons Inns
From the March 24, 2003 Issue of New York
The Bridgehampton Inn
A tiny white clapboard on Bridgehampton’s Main
Street. Gourmands will appreciate that Anna and Detlef
Pump, owners of the famed Loaves and Fishes, are in
the kitchen ($255–$420; 631-537-3660;
bridgehamptoninn.com).
The Enclave Inn
Formerly owned by Martha Stewart’s daughter,
Alexis, this Bridgehampton retro motor lodge has lush
grounds and a heated swimming pool, in case the two
miles to the ocean seems too far ($75–$229;
877-998-0800; enclaveinn.com).
The American Hotel
Built in 1846, this brick inn is still Sag
Harbor’s classiest. The hotel bar and
restaurant—renowned for its wine
list—stays packed till the wee hours (from $230;
631-725-3535; theamericanhotel.com).
The Maidstone Arms Inn
Probably the best-known spot on East Hampton’s
main drag, the sixteen-room Maidstone is perfectly
situated halfway between Main beach and the
town’s shopping center. Strange but true: The
inn’s antiques are for sale ($195–$475;
631-324-5006; maidstonearms.com).
The Mill House Inn
This sweet East Hampton Colonial looks like the
country home you’ve
always wanted—albeit one with a flat-screen TV
and a stereo in every room ($200–$650;
631-324-9766; millhouseinn.com).
Gansett Green Manor
All guests get their own suite or cottage with private
kitchen. The recently renovated property is a short
walk to the ocean and the beloved Amagansett Farmers
Market ($200–$450; 631-267-3133;
gansettgreenmanor.com).
The 1770 House
For sheer luxury, East Hampton’s 1770 House is
tough to beat—some of the eight guest rooms have
fireplaces, and all have private baths. Families
should check out the very cute carriage house ($525 a
night for four, plus $50 per extra person) with its
upstairs loft ($100–$525; 631-324-1770;
1770house.com).
White Sands Resort
True beach bums will choose ocean views—the
motel is right on the Amagansett dunes—over
Frette sheets any day ($95–$260; 631-267-3350;
whitesands-resort.com).
The Inn at East Hampton Point
Dock your boat at the marina and check into a country
cottage or studio overlooking the water. The tennis
courts, swimming pool, and fitness center are new.
East Hampton town is fifteen minutes down Three Mile
Harbor Road ($145–$495; 631-324-9191;
easthamptonpoint.com).
Ocean Beach Resorts
Step out onto your private sun deck at this Montauk
hideaway and then onto the sand to join the surfers.
It’s a short walk to the village for breakfast,
Ben & Jerry’s, or a movie ($70–$325;
631-668-4000; duneresorts.com).
