Weekend Trips - The Mayflower Inn in Connecticut
Litchfield County, Connecticut
Give thanks for the Mayflower Inn

From the March 26, 2001 Issue of New York

When the stress of Manhattan gets to be too much, the simplest solution is a two-hour drive to the Mayflower Inn in Litchfield County, Connecticut. Book a massage the moment you arrive in the fully equipped spa and feel the tension melt away. The inn is the brainchild of Adriana and Robert Mnuchin, who tried to re-create an English country manor house -- and they haven't overlooked a thing. The 25 bedrooms are tastefully furnished with antiques, Frette linens on the four-poster beds, spacious bathrooms with deep tubs, even a decanter of sherry for a pre-dinner aperitif. Chef Thomas Moran's menu features local produce in the formal dining room, with a lighter menu in the cozy tap room next door. For an after-dinner drink, retire to the paneled library, enjoy the roaring fire and extensive collection of antique and modern books -- and just feel at home. There's a cunningly concealed swimming pool, and quiet walks in the beautiful gardens of this 28-acre estate. Saturday morning, choose between a four-and-a-half-mile hike or an aerobics class, but if antiques hunting is more your style, this area is mecca.
